Jewelcrafting/Enchanting for ubergold in WotLK

OK, I’ve been away from making WoW gold for quite a long while. This isn’t really a great tip, but please bear with me as I get back into the flow of bringing in thousands of WoW gold.

First, this is an advanced strategy requiring you to to have at least several hundred gold as starting capital and have leveled your Jewelcrafting and Enchanting professions to a minimum of 350 each. If you are at least in your 60s and are able to do dailies in the Burning Crusade then this is a guide for you.

As every Jewelcrafter knows, prospecting ore gets you gems to use both for crafting jewelry and for use in slotted items. You can make some decent money from doing this throughout your leveling. It is also a no-brainer that if you have a solid cash-flow from other activities (like BC dailies or auctioneering) you can drop the Mining skill, buy all your ore from the auction house and pick up Enchanting to sell disenchanted materials from your jewelry.

For anyone who has been practicing this (or plans to) and has managed to raise both their Jewelcrafting and Enchanting to 350, the following Jewelcrafting recipes are probably the cheapest and easiest to produce compared to the money you will get from selling their disenchants:

These cost only 2 Crystallized Earth and one gem of the appropriate type, making them relatively cheap to produce. While I would recommend prospecting with Saronite Ore for the increased drop chance of epic gems, you can use Cobalt Ore also.

The items above disenchant mainly into Infinite Dust, but have the chance also to d/e into Lesser Cosmic Essence or a Small Dream Shard. Depending on your realm, all of these will bring in a lot more gold than the raw ore or jewelry it is crafted into.

And if you stick to prospecting Saronite Ore for your gems, the nice pile of epic gems can be cut into socketable gems that can almost be guaranteed to make you thousands of gold. To really take advantage of this, you will need to be pushing 400 in your Jewelcrafting level. So if you start this technique at a lower level, you might want to hold off on using Saronite Ore until you’ve crafted a bunch of the items from the list above.

The underpinning question that either makes or breaks the gold with this technique is where to get the mats to make your jewelry in the first place?

The obvious and optimal answer is to have an alt character who is high enough level to take on the duties of Mining or Enchanting. You may not have an alt that can do that, or you might not want to take the time and effort to mine the ore and mail it. In that case you will want to buy it from the auction house.

If you choose to buy your ore from the auction house, you will need to make sure and carefully plan out how much the disenchanted materials sell for and which cut gems sell the best. You can do a quick and informal study simply by doing the following figures:

(stack of ore) * (gem drop chance) / (price of stack of ore) = p

2(price of 1 crystallized earth) + p = price of item for disenchant

Now simply compare the gold it costs you to produce one of those items to the average price the disenchant materials go for on the auction house for your realm. There is more math to be done here for those so inclined. I will leave it for later or for a helpful reader to add to the comments section.

Chances are very good even if you find your realm sucks for this technique, you can still skim an extra thousand or so gold a week in profit by sticking with it and finding the best times of week to list your materials. And like I wrote earlier, if you stick with the Saronite ore and have the recipes to cut the popular gems on your realm, you could be banking gold in the five figures every week. It goes without saying, the Auctioneer addon is still a gold-maker’s best friend.

You can find all kinds of awesome tips like this in the Ultimate WoW Guide. It’s a complete guide with strategies for making gold, leveling quickly and even the best PVP strategies. I have found it quite indispensible.
